Ruth Leon recommendsThe Corn Is Green – National Theatre
Just now available on the National Theatre At Home platform is The Corn is Green, an autobiographical play by the actor and writer Emlyn Williams about his coming of age in a mining village in rural North Wales in the 1920s.
Nicola Walker plays Miss Moffatt, a legendary teacher who arrives in the village determined to help young local miners out of poverty by teaching them to read and write. Emlyn, (called Morgan Williams in the play) is both the central character and the narrator of his own story, and he becomes her biggest success.
This triumphant production by Dominic Cooke is the first London production of The Corn Is Green for 35 years and it was worth waiting for.
