The Bernard Haitink Conducting Fellowship, founded by Patricia Haitink, has placed a young American on a two-year internship with Sir Simon Rattle at Munich’s BRSO.

Sasha Scolnik-Brower, 29, was previously a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival.

Rattle himself assisted Haitink fifty years ago at the Glyndebourne Festival.

press release: The ‘Bernard Haitink Conducting Fellowship’ was made possible through a gift by Bernard Haitink’s widow Patricia Haitink and will offer young, highly talented conductors a two-year fellowship with the BRSO starting in the 2024/25 season under the mentorship of chief conductor Simon Rattle.
Sasha Scolnik-Brower won the position against numerous candidates and began his fellowship with the St Matthew Passion as assistant to Sir Simon Rattle and had already gained impressions during the orchestra’s previous summer festival tour. Over the course of the next two seasons, the 29-year-old will assist both the chief conductor and a number of Guest conductors, accompany the BRSO on tour in Asia and also conduct concerts himself.

It says a lot that the fellowship is going to be hosted by BRSO and not by Concertgebouw Orchestra…

Yes, that Rattle is with the BRSO, not the Concertgebouworkest…

There is already an Associate Conductorship sponsored by the Haitink family with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. That was announced several months ago.

  • Instrumentalist says:

I know his mother, a supremely talented flutist and producer of a highly respected chamber music series. Very talented musical family.
