Hilary Tunstall-Behrens, co-founder of the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove, has died aged 98.
The IMS said:
He died peacefully at home with his wife Tatiana and family at his side. Our thoughts are with the family, and the IMS Prussia Cove community. His loss will be felt keenly and by many from all over the world.
Wherever we are in the world, the family ask us to raise a glass of single malt to him, sharing in their sadness, but above all to celebrate his life, his dedication to the musical idealism that IMS embodies, and his profound love of the IMS family he founded with his teacher Sándor Végh 52 years ago.
Hilary Tunstall-Behrens served in mine-sweepers during the war; sailed in the four-masted barque PAMIR; and sailed his own ten-ton cutter to most parts of the world.
The International Musicians Seminar (IMS) Prussia Cove was founded by the Hungarian violinist, Sándor Végh and Hilary Tunstall-Behrens on his estate in Cornwall in 1972.
I was at school in Germany in 1959 at Schule Schloss Salem, where he was on the teaching staff and learned about sailing from him.
