Met concertmaster takes job in Taiwan
OrchestrasThe joint concertmaster of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, David Chan, has been named artistic director of the Taipei Music Academy & Festival until 2028.
Chan’s parents are from Taiwan. He says: ‘Contributing to Taiwan’s music education and international cultural exchange is something to which I have always aspired.’
The festival has also announced Fabio Luisi as conductor of its orchestra. He says: ‘I am delighted that David has been appointed Artistic Director of TMAF. David is a fantastic musician and a great person, and I fully support and welcome this decision.’
Chan is in his 24th season as Met concertmaster.
Wow — he looks about 36. Was he appointed CM at the Met when he was 12?
Publicity head shot. How long ago? How much airbushed?
Check out some recent photos. Mr. Chan will look that age forever…partly because of his kind and positive demeanor. (Try it…)
The Met is lucky to have held on to him for so long.
Robert Chen, CSO concertmaster, doesn’t like that at all.
The such a small country, Taiwan seems to produce a disproportionately huge number of orchestral musicians in Europe and the US.
taiwan is not recognized as a country by the u.n.
What you said sounds like what the Chinese would say. Regardless of whether it is true or not, it is basically only the Chinese who would say it.
Oh?~ Sad little Pinkie has to bring out the UN, an organization infiltrated by CCP to fulfill its unreachable dream to rule a democratic country with advanced technologies and talented people.
South Korea’s also not that big of a country and look at how many top notch classical musicians they produce both in S. Korea and from Korean communities in U.S.
Congratulations and best wishes, David Chan! I enjoyed your onstage performance in the Met’s Giulio Cesare.
