Death of UK international contralto
RIPThe death has been reported of Nuala Willis, an English stage and costume designer who went on to enjoy an extensive career for 35 years as an opera singer.
Nuala was 83.
She is survived by her husband, the baritone John Rawnsley.
Conductor Graeme Jenkins writes: ‘Her innate stagecraft was legendary. Her warmth of personality unrivalled.’
Nuala Willis was an outstanding, unique artist. Whether on stage in drama (Medea), cabaret, opera (the most wonderful Mother Goose), writing books for children or designing and fabricating costumes for the stage, Nu was at the top of her game everywhere.
Her energy, kindness and bubbly humour were legendary. I knew no one like her and never shall again.
Pimm’s Cups. Dinners. Gossip. Playing the occasional audition for her. All remain as treasured memories.
I believe we all give our deepest sympathy to John, who created a remarkable and respect/love filled marriage for us all to admire.
R. I. P. dearest Nu ♥️

Sad to hear that. She was fabulous at comedy and her diction was outstanding.
There is a live recording on you tube of Ponchielli’s La Gioconda with Pauline Tinsley in which Nuala Willis sings the role of La Cieca absolutely beautifully. La Cieca’s aria is in the first act.
Conducted by me! If Norman will allow, I will send him the Voce di Donna. I can still hear it as I write! Fabulous.
