Wonderful news! Maybe he’ll have a chance at the New York Philharmonic. Why not? Can’t play underground forever. Bravo!
At present, there is not an opening in the oboe section of the New York Philharmonic.

Dear John,
Please come to LA.
Thanks
Mr. Upton won the Met’s principal oboe AUDITION.
John won a blind, open audition for which two hundred oboists applied.
Let’s not pretend they couldn’t tell it was him. I could tell you plenty of oboists just by listening, and I’d put a decent bet on being able to identify one I’d worked alongside closely.
Not saying he shouldn’t have been chosen, but blind auditions aren’t as anonymous as people think they are.
It wasn’t a promotion, he won the audition. Huge difference.
