Just in: BBC extends Finn to 2030
OrchestrasThe BBC Symphony Orchestra has renewed the contract of chief conductor Sakari Oramo by five more years. He has been in charge since 2013. He will conduct the Last Night of the Proms again this Saturday on live TV.
Sakari says: ‘here’s an aspiration, shared by all parties at the BBC, to take the orchestra forward to its centenary in 2030. Big things are planned for the hundredth anniversary and around the orchestra’s move to what will be its purpose-built home at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. We will work hard to establish our presence in that part of London and attract a local audience to the new BBC Music Studios. It’s a great opportunity to take what the BBC Symphony Orchestra is about to a diverse community, especially as we enter prepare to our second century. I am genuinely excited by the potential and the possibilities’.
Someone with zero charisma fits this position quite well.
Not
Very good Mozart conductor
I would have thought being an outstanding conductor would còme before ‘ charisma ‘…….whatever that is.
I didn’t know ‘charisma’ was the key criterion! I imagined musicality, leadership and affability might be key?
Just as well they have Oramo, then, who has huge authority, commitment and communicative skill on the podium.
Please post your address, Rose, so I may send a saucer of milk.
Sakari Aramo is very welcome here in London as far as I am concerned.
Great news. In my view he’s the finest Elgar conductor of the day. And the Barbican concerts are the best value in the country: decent stalls seat for around £10.
Splendid news. Congratulations.
What “diverse community”?
What or who is Sakari Oramo talking about? Is this another British euphemism?
Why does the BBC exist? Isn’t “broadcasting” really a thing of the past?
How does the BBC differ from Al Jazeera?
Why not spend the money on lowering pensioners’ heating bills?
What is a British euphemism?
Are they better or worse than American ones?
Should they receive a better subsidy?
Can we sign up for a course in making up British euphemisms?
Inanity personified! Perhaps we should simply abandon all public support for the arts to let prosperous elders go on yet more cruises?
“What diverse community”? East London. Check out the demographics of Newham, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.
This is excellent news. The BBC Symphony Orchestra is a great orchestra and reflects well on the Boult years of so long ago. Oramo’s conducting of British music is, in my opinion, outstanding. Thanks to the BBC for extending his contract to the 100th year of the orchestra. It will be quite a celebration.
