Biz news: Boutique seeks shelter
NewsThe independent artists manager Camilla Wehmeyer has joined Intermusica as Associate Director, Vocal & Opera, bringing 11 singers with her.
A survivor of the collapse of Hazard Chase at the start of the pandemic, Wehmeyer had been running her own show for four and a half years, but economic conditions are not getting any easier and Intermusica offered to integrate her entire company. Her artists are:
Sydney Mancasola, soprano
Miah Persson, soprano
Sumi Jo, soprano
Cecelia Hall, mezzo-soprano
Paula Murrihy, mezzo-soprano
Anna Stéphany, mezzo-soprano
James Gilchrist, tenor
Peter Hoare, tenor
Caspar Singh, tenor
Joshua Hopkins, baritone
Edward Nelson, baritone
What an odd reading. I received the press release from Intermusica just now and there was nothing in there to suggest any economic reason for the merger – what’s the source for suggesting it?
Camilla is a fabulous manager, lucky Intermusica!
The list is rather unremarkable. Why would Intermusica want to invest in a list that doesn’t have a truly international reach? Aren’t several of the singers on it nearing the end of their careers? Not a great move!
Ignorance is bliss? A detailed look at the roster and the engagements of those artists will confirm that they are the very definition of artists with international reach.
Feels like a bit of a step backwards. Bit of a cheap and easy sell out! A shame really, as the industry really needs more boutique alternatives committed to enabling current and future artists’ careers.
John Osbourn, the arts philanthropist, was the Chairman of her agency. Is he not still involved?
