The cello audition on Friday was won by Moritz Huemer, from one of Europe’s smallest sovereign states.

Huemer, 25, came through the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. His former Instagram comedy account – moritz_cello – caught the eye of some of the Berlin players, who contacted him to apply for audition. He will join the orchestra for a trial period in May.

Wonderful news, very happy for Moritz

  • osf says:

If he was already an Academy student, wouldn’t he be highly likely to audition in any case?

  • Sammy says:

    World’s best cellist <3

  • Claudia says:

Bravo Moritz, you are the best! You really deserve it!

  • morinator nr 1 says:

    worlds best cellist

  • Fred Funk says:

    Meanwhile in the viola section….

  • Gerry Feinsteen says:

He’s very funny. Berlin better watch out: Since higher salaries are, according to New York Philharmonic and San Fran Sym musicians, ‘the main draw,’ he might be lured to the US after he’s [inevitably] invited by the new concertmaster to play in the BSO (after TwoSet and Lindsay Stirling, of course).

    • Sander says:

American orchestras are not comparable to the Berlin Philharmonic…there is no way!

      • Gerry Feinsteen says:

You are not wrong. But from the perspective of the orchestras I mentioned, their protests for higher wages are grounded in their fervent belief that a higher salary is necessary to maintain high levels of playing. Berlin is an example: who would prefer NY Philharmonic over BPO on grounds of salary?
These American orchestras are spoiled and they want to stay that way. There’s a surplus of excellent players waiting for a job and a surplus of tenured players, many of whom haven’t practiced since last season, if at all in the Biden years.
