Jury president of this violin competition is a singer. Weird, no?
Admirable. She’s certifiably neutral with no students among the competitors.
True enough, N.L., but so would be a cellist, moreover a cellist would know exactly what to listen for and judge when dealing with violinist participants, especially when evaluating things like staccato and just about anything dealing with the right hand.
Win or lose, top three is pretty good. This kid is at Curtis and last week’s winner studied at Juilliard. But the music training in Canada is doing something right, as the country continues to punch above its weight musically.
Well, he’s getting his music training at Curtis, which is not in Canada last I checked. But I’ll agree that he undoubtedly received some excellent training in Canada to be in a position to be admitted at Curtis. Two professional musician parents had something to do with that, most likely.
Neither is Juilliard. I was praising, whatever prepared them to get into those fine and competitive institutions.
Jacques Forestier won Edmonton’s Shean Strings Competition in 2021.
Jaeden Izik-Dzurko won the Shean Piano Competition in 2022.
Edmonton got great sneak previews …
A singer does not have sufficient expertise to make an informed decision. No doubt she likes some more than others, but this choice is not based on professional criteria! Expert violinists and pedagogues with highest standards and sharp ears belong in there! Specialists who have spent their whole lives with the instrument searching for the very best results can differentiate between highest quality and ordinary violin student quality!
