Two Vienna Philharmonic members retire
Orchestrasmessage received:
As our residency in Salzburg comes to an end this week, bassoonist Štěpán Turnovský and trumpet player Reinhold Ambros will retire on September 1.
Chairman Daniel Froschauer expressed gratitude to our esteemed orchestra members for their dedication and invaluable contributions over the years. We wish them all the best in their well-deserved retirement.
Yannick N-S waded into the ranks to give each of them a special recognition at the end of the VPO’s Salzburg Symphonie Fantastique.
Is the fella in the lederhosen (second from left in your picture) the one who is retiring? Not many of those left!
No, Reinhold Ambros is the first from left.
Any bets on the chances that they’ll hire a woman for either open seat? My guess: the brass section will be the last to ever see a woman in the Vienna Phil, even as they grudgingly admit a trick of strings and woodwinds (flutes especially).
I’m sure they will be the last. I heard the BPO Bruckner 5 the other day, and the horns (Sarah Willis etc) ran out of puff! Could have been the sound engineering I guess, but…let’s see how they do tonight at the Proms.
They hired a woman for principal bassoon!
^edit “a trickle of strings and woodwinds.”
After his Vienna Phil concert, Muti took the time to bake a speech where he announced their retirement and asked the public for a special applause.
Make…
