Czech maestro quits after blasting Slovak minister
OperaRobert Jindra has resigned as chief conductor of the Košice State Philharmonic, in Slovakia.
The Czech maestro had previously issued a blast at the country’s Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová for dismissing the heads of the country’s national theatre and national gallery. Jindra accused her of abuses of power.
The new government in Bratislava is hostile to democratic institutions and friendly towards the Putin regime in Russia.
By installing insecurity in the arts this way, the Slovak Ministry of Culture directly infringes the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, specifically the Article 13 – Freedom of the arts and sciences :
“The arts and scientific research shall be free of constraint. Academic freedom shall be respected.”
