Cleveland nets another $5 mill
OrchestrasThe Cleveland Orchestra has received a $5 million gift from the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation in support of the Kelvin Smith Family Chair held by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst.
Welser-Möst will step down when his contract ends in June 2027. At that time, he will become the longest-serving musical leader in the ensemble’s history.
Good for Cleveland. One has to assume that the price of the next MD will be higher than what Cleveland is currently paying, assuming they land a top tier conductor.
I’m very grateful to the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Fund. for its ongoing support of our magnificent orchestra. It is the mainstay which keeps Cleveland a musical heaven!
Gosh, and I thought it was the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that did that.
Uh, you might want to take a closer look at the history of the Cleveland Orchestra. Start with a guy named Szell.
Or even with one called Rodziński.
Or the underestimated IMO Erich Leinsdorf.
