Salzburg artistic director is banned from local cafe

The persistent journalist Axel Brüggemann has obtained confirmation of long-running rumours that the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival Markus Hinterhäuser has been blacklisted by the Cafe Bazar, a popular watering hole.

Ours not to reason why, but the Salzburg press office has told Axel that ‘apart from the Café Bazar , there are no comparable situations in Salzburg’s restaurants for the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival.’

Which must be a relief.

Bazar has been open daily since September 1909. Its guest book contains autographs by Stefan Zweig, Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Marlene Dietrich, Bertha Zuckerkandl, Thomas Mann, Thomas Bernhard, Arturo Toscanini, Romy Schneider and Seiji Ozawa.

    Brüggemann should be banned, period.

  • John W. Norvis says:

It lost a lot in the translation.

  • Willym says:

It hasn’t been the same since they removed Bazartoast from the menu.

  • freedom for art says:

    that s disgusting.

  • Rob van der Hilst says:

Is it appropriate to assume that with this exclusion the turnover of the café in question – especially with regard to the sale of alcoholic beverages – will suffer a sharp decline? Just say YES! 🙂

  • Karl Keller says:

Is this what journalism has become? We learn absolutely nothing- he does not even mention why Hinterhäuser is banned. This is nothing more than a bad gossip column.

‘Persistent’ is probably accurate, but I feel ‘journalist’ is flattering Brüggemann. It is a typically bitter, egotistical, insinuating and threatening blog, and deeply unpleasant with it. Brüggemann clearly feels he deserves to be friends with important people. But Axel, here’s a thing – people can be friendly with you and share gossip over a few drinks. It doesn’t mean you are bound to them for life. Don’t be a d*ck and maybe people will be more inclined to spend time with you…

It would help if we had access to a comprehensive list of all the celebrities who drink and dine there. I read that Toscanini is seen there occasionally. What about Barack Obama, Yannik Nézet-Séguin, Robert De Niro, Tár? It would be of great help as we all deal with this enormous issue.

The blog is a fine piece of knockabout. No point in critiquing it as if it was intended to appear on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, it belongs in the fine tradition of Austrian Tratsch journalism, where serious points are hidden inside rumour, innuendo and blind guesswork.

As to Hinterhäuser himself, some years ago I was present at a shameful evening at London‘s Wigmore Hall, a song recital by Matthias Goerne accompanied on the piano by yes Markus Hinterhäuser. Hinterhäuser‘s thuggish and exhibitionistically sadistic treatment of a hapless page-turner soured the evening for many of us, particularly those sitting near enough to see and hear exactly what happened. But it provided a usefully uninhibited glimpse into the true personality of the artist currently heading the Salzburg Festival.

The man is clearly an a-hole. Hope he‘s banned from 36 Wigmore Street as well as coffeehouses across the continent.

I am quite literally sick to my stomach over this. This is such a huge, urgent, pressing international issue, one which affects all of us. How are we supposed to go about our daily lives when we don’t even know where this guy will be able , if at all, to get his coffee and pastries?
There’s just no justice in the world. I feel like boycotting this establishment [even though I had never heard of it and don’t ever intend to travel there.] Please keep us posted.
