It’s not just the rest of the world that bottom-bumping Ryanair enjoys tormenting.

Sharon Corr, a member of the Irish folk pop band The Corrs, has sent this message to Michael O’Leary, the Ryanair boss – not that she can hope for a polite reply…

Today
I was booked on a Ryanair flight
I got up at 6 in the morning
I was not allowed on the flight because I had my violin
I was in the airport for 7 hrs
I had to return home after searching for my checked in bags. Humiliated, angry then crying as only a good woman can do.
Why was I going to Dublin? My home turf, to rehearse, to go on tour! I’m beyond disappointed. Michael o’ Leary, Shame on you.

She needs to edit that into more than a whinge and send it to the Irish Times.

When are musicians going to wake up and use some leverage to get airlines to set — and FOLLOW — reasonable policies?

  • Don Fatale says:

I don’t understand. Surely it’s a simple matter for Ryanair and others. Are violins allowed on the aeroplane or not?

    • Carl says:

It’s possible she arrived late and the overhead storage bins were full. When that happens, they have to check the instrument in the hold. Her commentary here leaves out some crucial details, however.

  • MomOfViolinist says:

I’m sorry to hear this. You really have to read the fine print for carry-ons and musical Instruments prior to paying. Every airline has their own policies.

    • Tiredofitall says:

It is not unreasonable to have an acknowledged and industry-wide policy for instrumentalists, hopefully with a bit of understanding of their special needs.

  • Shaggy says:

Entitled, overpaid idiot that doesn’t understand Ryanair are cheap for a reason. One of those reasons is a very clear, fixed size on hand luggage.
She wasn’t ‘shamed’ by Ryanair, she is just ashamed at her own ignorance and stupidity, her fault pure and simple.

    • Paul Dawson says:

I’ve not checked your facts, but I assume that the “very clear, fixed size on hand luggage” is correct.

Your tone, though, is intolerably obnoxious. I shall be happy to read your further comments, once you have learnt some manners.

      • V. Lind says:

A friend of mine who flies Ryanair regularly says that indeed they have a clear and fixed size for hand luggage. I do not know whether it it big enough to carry violins.

  • Wotan says:

    Or indeed any reply.

  • Alberto Tadini says:

    Ryanair.
    Why you trust Ryanair?

  • Monty Earleman says:

It’s the WORST airline- except for all the others…..

  • Sissi says:

She can’t be a very experienced traveler… really everyone knows that one has to buy a second ticket if you fly Ryanair and want to be sure to get to take your instrument into the cabin! Still, I’m sorry for her, she had to learn it this way..!
