The Councertgebouw has announced a replacement for the French conductor who is struggling with disclosures of dick-pics that he sent to female musicians.

At issue is an ambitious Schoenberg weekend in October:

François-Xavier Roth, who was originally scheduled to conduct these concerts, has decided to withdraw after consultation with the orchestra. Soprano Barbara Hannigan has unfortunately also had to cancel the production. The Concertgebouw Orchestra is looking forward to presenting this ambitious Schoenberg project with Ryan Wigglesworth and Sara Jakubiak.

I still can’t understand why this bloke ever thought sending those kinds of pictures was a good idea.

    • John Borstlap says:

Obviously he was not thinking with his brain but with another body part.

    • RW2013 says:

Most conductors have too much time on their hands. However if he would learn to play a musical instrument…

      • Ed says:

Of course, because memorising complex, hours-long compositions for 50+ instruments, transposing and in different clefs, with thousands of notes, trying to get to the heart of the piece’s meaning and emotional core, that takes no time at all…

        • Peter says:

If you can’t read all common clefs (violin, bass, tenor, alto, soprano) and all common transpositions (A, B-flat, E, E-flat, F and G) fluently, you shouldn’t be conducting. As a répétiteur, I’ve worked with so many conductors who don’t have the necessary skills and who aren’t keen on acquiring them. They listen to recordings and watch videos at home and then step onto the podium with no understanding of the music and poor baton technique. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen a conductor embarrass themselves in rehearsal due to lack of basic knowledge. I’ve played in opera productions where the conductor didn’t even bother to look up the meaning of the words (he was American, which should be considered a disability when it comes to foreign languages and cultures). A conductor who is simply good (not great) is considered such a phenomenon in the German opera houses I’ve worked in, that the news spreads like a wildfire throughout the building. It’s a sad state of affairs. So yes, most conductors are underqualified, overpaid and have far too much free time on their hands.

He esteemed his penis to be more handsome than his face; let’s hope it is!

But he is a very fine musician….

    • Alasdair Munro says:

      Did anyone request an enlargement?

  • Andrew Clarke says:

Well they should get their Wiggles worth: if not, I’ m sure Australia will be happy to supply additional Wiggles as required.

  • Sascha S says:

And now the SWR German broadcasters have decided to keep him. Insanity!

  • GUEST says:

Might it be possible, Norman, to replace the term ‘dick-pic’ with something more elegant? Even ‘phallic-photo- would do.

    • Eda says:

A good alternative but those of us living Downunder realise that many of the perpetrators may not even understand the term!

  • Santipab says:

Isn’t it a source of constant amazement how dim some intelligent people can be.

I wonder what the LSO will do; he has concerts with them in October, November and January.

  • Nick says:

Nice to see that Ms. Hannigan is showing solidarity with M. F-X Roth… What really concerns me is who is going to replace him for all those Boulez concerts in 2025? (e.g. Pli Selon Pli with Mme. Sabine Devieihe no less!)

    • Andrew Powell says:

Franck Ollu with Sarah Aristidou, Devieilhe following Hannigan’s example?

But he may still conduct the Boulez 100 program at Baden-Baden, with the new orchestrations of Notations V and VI (as “hommages”) from Mark Andre and Enno Poppe. That’s in May, with SWR, and a full year will have passed.

    • Andrew J Clarke says:

      Pli Selon Pli,
      You know you need me,
      The whole BBC
      Loves Pli-ii-i-ii-iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
      Selon *Pli-i

*Karlheinz: your mouthorgan bit starts here. Get it right.

    • Santipab says:

As far as I know Barbara Hannigan hasn’t made any comment on FXR so it looks like an assumption that she is showing solidarity? Maybe she was the one that cancelled, when this problem with FXR came to light.

  • James Potter says:

What was he thinking sending pornographic pictures of himself? That just plain isn’t done!!!

  • Save the MET says:

The person I feel for in this charade is his father Daniel, one of the world’s great organists. The recently retired titular organist of St. Sulpice is known as a kind and caring man. To have to endure the shame of his son’s actions at this stage in his life is beyond.
