Cancer claims BBC Proms composer
RIPThe death has been announced of the composer and pianist Sarah Gibson, a member of the piano duet Hocket and a core artist of LA-based Piano Spheres, which commissions and promotes new works for piano.
The composer Jennifer Higdon writes: ‘What a heartbreaking loss of such a gifted, kind, and generous soul. I met Sarah when she was a young budding composer/pianist, still in high school. It was always a joy to cross paths with her at the Atlanta Symphony, at the 8th Blackbird Creative Lab (where she taught me how to create a piano mute), and at various places throughout the years of travel and performing. I am forever grateful to have known her. Let’s all honor Sarah by our acts of kindness.’
Sarah’s latest work beyond the beyond, a BBC commissioin, will be premiered at the BBC Proms on August 8.
Terrible story…. of a radiant woman.
Fascinating work … RIP
So heartbreaking to learn these news of Sarah’s devastating passing. I was very fortunate to get to work with Dr. Sarah Gibson at ucsb and she was so talented and beautiful inside and out. My thoughts are with her family, she will be deeply missed.
Thank you Dr. Gibson for your music, energy, humanity, you are a bright light that will continue to shine in heaven!
I am devastated. I was her piano teacher in high school and helped her find her first real composition teacher and prepare for college auditions. What a beautiful human being and extraordinary musical talent she was! I am heartbroken for her family.
So sad…
