Jonathan Manners has been appointed Director of the BBC Singers ‘following a competitive recruitment process’.

Manners has been the group’s producer since 2016, responsible for artistic direction and broadcast output. He says: ‘I am thrilled to be stepping up to the role of Director of the BBC Singers, whilst retaining the artistic leadership of the group, which has been such a rewarding responsibility for nearly 9 years.’

Stability, at last.

Such a pity that the distinction couldn’t have been offered to Michael Emery. However, congratulations to Mr Manners. Long overdue.

What a bizarre thing to say. The Director position has always existed in one form or another, most notably was held by Paul Hughes from the late 90s for the next few decades. Michael Emery was the producer of the BBC Singers. This position is not an honour bestowed on Jonathan Manners as the BBC Singers producer, it is a management level position that was publicly open to applications in March 2024, and Manners was one of many people who applied for it. The producer role is now vacant and one assumes wil be filled in due course following a similar recruitment process.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy but what is the difference between being Producer and Director?
Is Jonny now going to be conducting them as well as managing??
