Comments

  • Save the MET says:

She’s been doing this for years and clearly lost the plot. She’s one of J.D. Vance’s “crazy cat ladies” her legacy besmirched.

    • John Kelly says:

I have no quibble with your assessment of her sanity, however Mr Vance referred to “childless cat ladies” (childless not crazy). Another unfunny remark from the least qualified and least likeable candidate for VP in living memory (maybe Spiro Agnew is in living memory for some – Nixon wouldn’t allow him in the Oval Office – a good suggestion for Mr Vance).

      • Paul Dawson says:

I didn’t know that about Agnew. I well recall the Private Eye cover after the election.

“No-one’s gonna shoot me with Spiro T Agnew next in line.”

        • John Kelly says:

There’s a lot more about Agnew in Dwight Chapin’s book “The President’s Man.” Most interesting is his description of Nixon’s work ethic – he would shut himself in the Oval Office from 2-5 and permit no disturbances (unless an emergency). With a pile of yellow pads he read and made notes for 3 hours every day. He probably did more work in a day than Trump did in a month.

          • Bone says:

And yet he will be POTUS.
What specific accomplishments of Trump do you find disagreeable?

      • Retired Cellist says:

I would argue that the badly misjudged selection of a patently absurd running mate was a not-insignificant factor in John McCain’s loss as well, just as I hope it will be for the current candidate as well.

      • Bone says:

        Cry more.

  • Willym says:

It looks like ssomeone is off her meds again.

Though I question what this I has to do with “classical music” other than it comes from a singer.

  • Thomas says:

Why on earth do you give this deranged drivel any publicity?

  • James Chater says:

Of couse the fact that it is in italics and capital letters makes it that much truer.

  • Mock Mahler says:

    Wow, what low notes!

  • Lyrita says:

If you flipped this the other way round, politically, and translated it into UK terms, you could basically publish it as an editorial in Opera magazine.

  • gfg says:

Perhaps the singer should make a comeback in a program of mad scenes.

  • Willym says:

It would appear that someone is off their meds.

Other than it is a comment from a (it would appear) former singer what exactly does this have to do with “classical music”? I would

Sorry if this is a repeat but I am having problems with the comment area on my mobile devises. Surely Slipped Disc should be one place were we could avoid the circus of US politics.

  • Tiredofitall says:

Where to begin…racist, homophobic, delusional…on and on.

This is screed beyond anger. This is why there are mental health professionals who can prescribe drugs.

  • Paul Dawson says:

A soprano should not sound this shrill.

  • Perturbo47 says:

Stupid **and** illiterate. What a piece of work!

  • Alank says:

Why is this on Slipped Disc? Sure it is over the top, but I essentially agree with much of the substance. I don’t see Norman quoting all the stupid and over the top nonsense emanating from leftist musicians and artists. Kamala has expressed solidarity with the viscous protesters on US campuses. And don’t come back with the fact that Kamala’s husband is Jewish. So is Bernie Sanders and so were Kapos.

  • Alviano says:

    Wow!

  • lucas says:

    Wow! That’s over the top.
Question – I wonder what “Michael Obama” thinks about this. You gotta love it when autocorrect intervenes.

  • Deb Tanneri says:

So many ranty capital letters. Is that how she sings?

  • Tom Phillips says:

Sorry, didn’t realize she was so mentally and morally deranged. In any case she is nothing more than an overweight far from beautiful has-been – or in reality “never-was”, deservedly forgotten following her exceedingly short “prime”.

    • Tiredofitall says:

Not to defend in any way her comments, Ms. Marc did have an international career for over 20 years with major opera houses and symphony orchestras. Commenting on her weight or looks is despicable, regardless of how you feel about her political views. Rather low.

      • Tom Phillips says:

Maybe in her prime for about 3 of those years. And the demise of her career is not at all un-related to her appearance since her actual vocal qualities were not all that impressive compared to others in her fach. Or her non–existent acting abilities.

      • Jory Vinikour says:

She was an absolutely glorious singer. It is dismaying to witness these outbursts from her.

  • professional musician says:

Please spare us of such dreck…one doesn´t want to be bothered by the fascist, racist rants of a deranged has been.

  • Retired Cellist says:

I read something about how she suffered a serious injury some years ago that effectively derailed her career. Probably has plenty of time now to sit in front of the computer and self-radicalize.

  • A.L. says:

Poor woman. She is long finished in more ways than one.

  • frank says:

” You have a point, an idiotic point.”

  • M2N2K says:

    Happy Birthday, Alessandra!

  • David says:

I LOOKED AT HER FB PAGE. SHE LIKES TO USE ALL CAPS.

  • sabrinensis says:

Inelegantly expressed but substantively and indisputably correct. Nonetheless, it doesn’t belong here. How many unhinged rants in support the ideologically opposite of Marc’s views are published here? None and this should not be either. Take it down, keep it to music.

    • Elizabeth Owen says:

What do you mean correct? What’s wrong with you? Hopefully Kamala can sue her.

      • Tiredofitall says:

I doubt it is something Ms. Harris hasn’t heard before and as a mature person, she considers the source, if she gives it a second thought at all.

  • Herbie G says:

I had never ever heard of her until today. Why didn’t you leave it that way?

  • Ron says:

    Take your meds.

  • Eric Anderson says:

What does this have to do with her singing?

  • Ben G. says:

“THIS ELECTION AIN’T OVER UNTIL THE FAT LADY SINGS”…

Who will have the last laugh Alessandra?

  • Alexandra Ivanoff says:

She may be “sour” and inappropriate to post such a screed, but a lot of people agree with what she wrote. Just sayin’…

    • Tiredofitall says:

Yes, and there is a mental health crisis.

    • Tom Phillips says:

What a surprise coming from a person of Russian origin!

    • professional musician says:

People with IQ below room temperature, without character, honor, moral standards….Riff raff always supports riff raff…My fathers´family fled to the US in 1939 from Hitler´s fascism…Sad to see that the country who saved so many of us from fascism, willingly succumbs now to it.

  • Robert says:

The complaint the Kamala isn’t black enough seems insincere.

  • Robert says:

Usually, a rant such as this is followed by a demand to speak to a manager.

  • Rj Scmidt says:

Sounds like she has more health issues, other than her back/spine ailment.

  • Anninadondevieni says:

Alessandra Marc had one of the greatest soprano voices of the last decade, but her career was limited (not because of being a large women – there had been others like Caballe, Hunter, Voigt at the same time), but it looks like that only “the light was there, but nobody was home”. Her current rant above confirmed my suspicions.

    • Tom Phillips says:

Maybe 3 decades ago, not “the last decade” and certainly not a great voice, simply a powerful one.

    • Tiredofitall says:

Rather overstated to say one of the greatest voices, certainly not of the last decade. She stopped singing staged opera more than 16 years ago. She sang only nine performances of two roles (Aida and Turandot) at the Met.

    • M2N2K says:

Not “of the last decade”, but rather of the last decade of the last century, i.e. 1990s. Besides, both Hunter and Caballe were a full generation older, so their prime was at least two decades earlier than that of Marc.

  • Ernest says:

Oh dear! What happened to her? She was a well known singer in her time appearing in the leading opera houses often as an unsubtle but plausible Turandot, Aida etc. Did she go gaga following the loss of her career?

    • professional musician says:

I played in a gala performance with her, many years ago…She was a real pain in the ass, behaving badly against her colleagues on and off stage.

      • Ernest says:

I remember seeing her in a pair of galas in the Suntory Hall in Tokyo more than twenty years ago with the likes of Baltsa, Gwyneth Jones, Marton, Tomowa Sintow etc honoring the venerable Sasaki san founder of the Japan Performing Arts Foundation. Despite her large size, she was a cypher compared to the others on stage that night. The concert was huge fun, the highlight being the messy Ride of the Valkyres with the whole lot of them at full cry!

  • Willym says:

Again could you please explain why this is posted on here? Other than as click bait.

  • fstein says:

    Need we repeat this rubbish?

  • William Ward says:

What is most frightening is that millions of Americans believe this … Although I suspect few of them go to the opera.

  • Carol I. Crawford says:

Norman, please don’t pass on this type of hate (and ignorance) within this website. It ultimately serves no purpose, and some of your readers in the U.S. hear and read this kind of drivel on a daily basis. We would welcome a break from it all. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

  • Hollie says:

Just shows that classically trained musicians can be as stupid/gullible/gaslightable as any other educated group. . .

  • Bruno says:

About as coherent Rosanne Barr these days.

  • T D says:

Don’t need a lecture from a failed “diva.”

  • M2N2K says:

If you don’t think that she makes a valid point, you are a naive optimist. The problem is that the alternative is not a paragon of virtues either. That is a tragic reality we are facing this year.

    • John W. Norvis says:

Not a paragon of virtue? The term is “convicted felon”.

When they don’t even give you a bow

      • M2N2K says:

The word “not” isn’t there by accident, and my hope is that the simple art of ironic understatement is not beyond comprehension for most readers of this blog. Besides, the common sense wisdom by TL notwithstanding, seeing the difference between trials that are purely and explicitly politically driven and motivated – and anything resembling what we like to call true justice – should not be hard at all.

    • Marc says:

Ms. Marc “writings” are pure resentful drivel. Well represented by the agggrieved have beens that resent their loss of privilege and power over those that are different to them.

  • TP says:

Freedom of speech and all that, but it doesn’t mean anyone has to pay to hear her sing.

Such hate coming from her FB page.
How does one become so unhinged and filled with hate and lies?

  • Ludwig's Van says:

Well, honey – better stick to your day job (if in fact you still have one…) and yes, take those meds!

  • Maria says:

That’s far worse than John Eliot Gardiner’s smack. Words can be equally violent, and this is just disgusting. Fine, don’t like Democrats. Who else then have Americans chosen to compete? Trump and Vance?

  • GUEST says:

    She seems nice.

  • Paul says:

Alessandra had a very good/quite promising career but I was warned by colleagues to avoid her a long time ago due to her suspected mental health problems. Really sad…I loved her large, beautiful voice, although it had some weaknesses in the lower registers. Her first husband became a trans woman as she detailed in interviews at the time.

  • Michael says:

    YIKES…someone get her a sandwich…or 10 to 20

  • Opera Lover says:

The opera and classical music world is filled with rabid racist misanthropic elitists. And they are supported and defended until the finally go crazy. I am waiting for Christian Thielemann to have his right wing meltdown.

  • John says:

Who is this crazy person ?

  • harry collier says:

    Americans!

  • Scott Marshall says:

    You are one crazy lady!

  • Borys says:

She’s gone the all-caps route for her online posts, as if that gives them greater impact.
