Message from Seraph Brass, an all-female ensemble:

We are thrilled to welcome our newest core member, horn player Layan Atieh!

Layan Atieh is a Palestinian-American horn player currently residing in Cleveland, OH. Layan regularly performs with the Cleveland Orchestra and coaches the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO). Layan completed her undergraduate studies at the Peabody Institute under the tutelage of Robert Rearden, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Johns Hopkins University. In 2024, Layan completed her Masters degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Richard King and Nathaniel Silberschlag. Outside of music, Layan enjoys a variety of sports, including martial arts, rock climbing, and, most recently, pickleball.

Layan is brilliant- I’m always thrilled to see her subbing in the horn section at Cleveland. This is great news and I wish her every success!

Strange but it looks like the message on the Seraph Brass website says “Arab-American” – however did it get changed when it was being transcribed?

  • Willym says:

Interesting that the actual posting on their website says “Arab American “any idea how it got changed in your transcript?

It said US Palestinian on their social media

Just a thought from another journalist: when the original source is social media, check against the official source (e.g.website). To some people on social media, all Arabs are Palestinians. Or worse.

Also, in some US circles these days, Palestinian is synonymous with “cool” — the ultimate accolade of the vocabularily challenged.(Vanessa Redgrave must be wondering where such people were when she won her Oscar!).

A talented and active woman, and a radiant face.

But doesn’t she know that the koran specifically forbids horn playing by women?
