The SWR Symphony Orchestra has notified the media that its incoming artistic director Francois-Xavier Roth is unavailable for this summer’s concerts, ‘following allegations of sexual harassment.’

The Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen will replce his all-Schoenberg concert in JMJuly with works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Richard Strauss and Jean Sibelius.

Roth has been accused of sending dick-pics to female orchestra members.

SWR takes the information against Roth very seriously and will examine it carefully. The broadcaster’s primary goal is to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation.

    “Phallus et Mélisande”

SWR need to get hold of the evidence!

  • Andrew Powell says:

How do you go from all Schönberg (opp. 5, 36, 31) to no Schönberg?

Couldn’t SWR at least have found a conductor able to work with Capuçon in the concerto, which he presumably has prepared?

    • professional musician says:

Indeed. Among the conductors, who do it this season, are Tarmo Peltokoski, Jonathan Nott, Peeka Kuusisto, Masato Suzuki, Aziz Shokakimov

  • Barney says:

The headline spells harassment incorrectly. The story itself spells it correctly.

  • Couperin says:

I thought men received photos too.

  • Gabriel Parra Blessing says:

He should be kept off stage because he’s a lousy musician, along with the vast majority of HIP and HIP-adjacent charlatans.

    • professional musician says:

You always can stick to your Karajan Mantovani Mozart. He is one o f the very best…I played several times under him in 15 years, always a relevation….The usual old fart armchair conductors bull.

      • Edward says:

And how many times did you play under Karajan or Mantovani, whose names don’t need to be sullied in the bargain?

Yes, FXR is one of the best. One of the few, really.

SWR had better not be misrepresenting his position! I find it unlikely that he would voluntarily withdraw from the Schönberg program.

SWR threaded the needle nicely with the Currentzis problem. It needs to do at least as well with Roth because the artistic stakes are higher — and the orchestra knows this.

      • Gabriel Parra Blessing says:

Roth is a fraud and a shyster along with most HIPsters and that would make you one yourself as a peddler of such fraudulence.

Well, Dave Hurwitz, what do you expect? I found three very enthusiastic reviews in a couple of minutes (gramophone, the Guardian, ClassicalReview). Hatred of HIP can warp one’s judgement (just as fanatical adherence to HIP can).

        • professional musician says:

Do you actually listen to performancess, or do you need a shyster who listens for you?

      • Nova Pilbeam says:

I too played under him, absolutely brilliant musician. “Karajan Mantovani Mozart”, perfect description to describe those lugubrious, boring recordings .

    • Franz says:

Unfair comment, you do better. Then comment.

    • B. Guerrero says:

While I think you overstate the case, I’m in your camp. His recordings come off, at best, as average or slightly above average. Some of them are truly poor against the available competition. How is that a Frenchman who’s considered a major talent does Ravel poorly! To me it’s a case of the Emperor’s new clothes – literally.

  • William Ward says:

If true, despicable… And also inexplicable. How can any reasonably intelligent adult in our Internet age not realize the results of sexting, unless he is auditioning for a more graphic career.

    • Philipp Lord Chandos says:

If true, give him a selfie-stick instead of a baton, ask him to record Saint-Saëns’ “Organ” Symphony, and publish an album with his “crown jewels” showing on the front cover!
