Glad to hear he’s rockin’ it. Loved his work throughout the Cliburn, where he was among a few standouts not named Yunchan Lim.
In Zürich*
The Geza Anda competition is in Zurich ! Mr Shmukler is a very gifted musician and I hope to be able to listen to him soon.
He’s not “ex-Russian”, he’s 29 years of age, and the Concours Geza Anda is held in Zurich, not Geneva…
Good news, but what makes you think he is an “ex”? Getting rid of Russian citizenship volunteerly is a long and tedious procedure.
From his website: “Presently, he studies with Stanislav Ioudenitch at the International Center for Music at Park University in Parkville, Missouri.”
So what? People move around. Fernando Sor is called “Spanish composer” though he ended his life in France. Mauro Giuliani lived in Vienna for 13 years but remained an “Italian composer” (though, technically, there was no Italy yet back then and Paganini, for example, was a Genoan while Giuliani was a Sicilian).
There are foreign students all over the United States (and elsewhere).
What exactly is an “Ex-Russian”anyway?
Seems like the Geza Anda has moved? Yesterday they were still in Zurich….
He played magnificently, great sensibility, musicality and presence!
Already appreciated him during last van Cliburn.
He was born in Moscow. He is not an “ex-Russian”. He’s Russian.
We’re delighted that you have mentioned the winner of the 16th Géza Anda Competition in Zurich, the young russian pianist Ilya Shmukler who already lives since a couple of years in the US.I would also like to point out that the Geza Anda competition always takes place in Zurich and never in Geneva. With kind regards T.Richter, president of the Geza Anda Foundation.
