Comments

  • Yuri K says:

So what? Is this good or bad? Or just maybe an evidence that some competitions are still merit-based?

  • Ok then says:

    Take note

The last russian on the list, Nikolai Zemlianskikh is already on the roster of Ariosi Management (Domingo’s Agency)
I guess the winners have already
    been decided on

  • Ok then says:

Interesting also is that Mr Netrebko also joined this shady little agency

  • PianoMan says:

    Is that a problem?

  • DIMITRI VASSILAKIS says:

    Dear Mr. Lebrecht ,
Can you please explain the choice of your title ? Why not say , for example : Domingo picks 9 americans ?

  • Maria says:

So what? And seven from America where singers are now two a penny because of the fine teaching going on. Let the best singer – on that day – win purely on all round merit not mindless politics or just a voice. Being Irish, should I be made responsible so pay the price for the atrocities of and slaughtering that went on in Northern Ireland and beyond, and the bigatory? Not all Irish belong to the IRA but try to live out their Christian faith.

  • George says:

Very few Europeans…not one singer from Spain, Germany or France and just one Italian – the homebase countries of so many operas… kind of sad…

  • zandonai says:

99.9% young opera singers today sound alike because they all go to the same ‘international’ school of singing. Play me old opera recordings from before 1950 and I can tell you their nationalities and even their names!
