Munich Phil picks Cohen
OrchestrasThe orchestra has appointed the Israeli violinist Ohad Cohen in its first violin section auditions.
Cohen, 33, from Haifa, studied with Nava Milo at the Buchman-Mehta School in Tel Aviv before being accepted into the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Some interesting historical correlations. If I remember correctly, the Jewish concertmaster of the Munich Phil and his wife committed suicide after he was removed from his position during the Third Reich. I wanted to confirm the details, but there seems to be nothing on the web about it.
In 2022, the Munich Phil’s concertmaster, Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, was fired for being “too close to Russia” –an action of the Green and SPD parties. He is Romanian and had played in the Marinksy Theater Orchestra.
Nasturica-Herschcowici has played frequently with the Mariinsky (the Mariinsky’s own concertmasters were replaced by him quite often in the years before 2020 (which I found annoying as they were second choice compared to Gergiev’s pal and they sound much better – I vividly remember his Sinfonia concertante with Yuri Afonkin in Munich – the viola deep and glowing – the violin quite sharp and thin in comparison) and is extremely busy there since 2022 – obviously he has no issues with the environment graciously provided by a bloody dictator – why he appears as a conductor every so often is up to who knows
