Label news: Decca signs King’s harpist
NewsPress note:
Decca Classics is thrilled to announce the exclusive signing of Alis Huws, the Official Royal Harpist to His Majesty King Charles III.
Wonder whether King David could have got a music deal nowadays.
Male, white, Israeli, military officer? No way.
Don’t think King David would.
The current music industry has turned into nothing more than a beauty contest, where looks are first and music is third.
I assume you think money comes second then?
Everyone seems to be conflicted when it comes to art and commerce. In the end, classical music, opera in particular, has suffered in the age of the internet. Titillation is fine, but fleeting.
I think the internet has happily destroyed the monopoly of the recording companies.
I think the Church of England has renounced the faith of David long ago, but I did observe the music in the Coronation – and was horrified to only hear an excerpt of “Tros y Garreg”, Crossing the Stone.
No matter, I found that the Welsh television had aired it, and it was available online by the Royal Harpist.
In addition to Alis Huws, there was Sir Karl Jenkins listening with delightful thumbs up, and Sir Antonio Pappano conducting.

But will she ever tour?
Why don’t you just congratulate her, rather than trying to make this a whinge on behalf of ‘disadvantaged’ men??
How disrespectful is that – both towards her as an individual, and towards all women who have had to be twice as good, in order to get half as much work as their male peers?
Wow!!!
There is zero truth in that. The harp is over 90% played by women, and not all that well. They have natural advantages in earlier development of their manual dexterity, and use their looks to take advantage over men. It is the men who have to work far harder for far fewer opportunities. When is the last time you saw a man playing the harp in a hotel or restaurant, or at a wedding, or even in an orchestra?
You mean like Xavier de Maistre? Yeah, poor chap never got a chance…
Does the Decca recording contract mean Ms. Huws has been plucked from relative obscurity ?
She obviously got it because of her outgoing personality, her position as Royal Harpist, and the prior success, against all artistic standards, of her predecessor Catrin Finch. In other words, they see her as someone who will make money for them. Not art. Money.
She is mediocre at best, how appalling. The standards in Britain for harp are so low.
My bad, I misread the title as “King’s Herpes”
