Glyndebourne puts on climate protest and railway children
OperaNext summer’s two mainstage headliners are Parsifal, with over 200 performers, and yet another new staging of Marriage of Figaro.
But in the small print you will find two interesting new opera commissions – a community opera, Uprising, by composer Jonathan Dove and librettist April De Angelis that focuses on climate protests, and a setting of the much loved children’s story The Railway Children by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and librettist Rachael Hewer.
Let’s hope Glyndbourne has more luck with their “green” opera than the so unmemorable piece Lyric Opera of Chicago did a few seasons back. So unmemorable I cannot remember the title or the composer.
