The Ukrainian-Armenian soprano Maria Guleghina was one of the mainstays of the opera stage. She sang 160 times at the Metropolitan Opera and commanded 15 roles in major Italian houses.

And then, in 2021, it stopped.

Today, she explains why. Part of it is to do with being managed by her daughter.

But Guleghina is upbeat and ready for a comeback. She’s living in Luxembourg, 64 years old. Let the bookings roll in.

Here’s her account:

I haven’t sung for almost three years. First, there (was) COVID, then the attack on Artsakh and the 44-day war, then Russia’s Betrayal of Armenia, and pressure to sign a capitulation agreement. And then the terrible attack on Ukraine, and again – on Artsakh. The exodus from our historical lands of more than 100,000 residents.

I didn’t want to live.

The news of the closure of the Impresario (sic) agency destroyed me, buried me alive… Frau Natalia Neumann, my general manager (and my daughter!), informed me about the closure of her agency after the fact! I am ashamed of all the wonderful artists who came to her agency and were similarly discarded… All of this drove me crazy. I’ve lost my footing.

And suddenly, a Japanese producer invited me to perform Tosca with the opera theatre in Bologna! I thought about it and decided to go for it. Over these three dreadful years, I only sang about five times. There were galas with orchestras in Yerevan, Belgrade, Sofia. At least to bid farewell in a humane way to those who especially loved and appreciated me, where I sang with all the most important theatres and separately in many cities and halls. To bid farewell to the audience, who never betrayed me. I gathered my strength and got myself in shape for Japan – I lost 15 kg.

After the success in Japan, I reflected on how I got to this point in my life.

For me, the stage is my temple, my service! The meaning of life! How did all this become possible? I’m reminded of Tosca in 2015 at the Mariinsky Theatre, where it was impossible not to encore “Vissi d’Arte.” The audience demanded it! And two weeks later, my heart failed! Emergency transportation to the cardiac center in Munich and open-heart surgery. Even lying there with tubes, I tried to test my voice… it was as important to me as life. Exactly three months later, a contract at the Metropolitan Opera for Tosca! How could I cancel it? So what if there was a surgery! But I’m alive! I didn’t even want to tell the theatre that l wasn’t entirely healthy, to put it mildly. The doctors, the surgeon who saw me in the corridor, still walking with a walker, scratched his head. «Impossible! Not earlier than 7-8 months at the earliest», – he said. I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me or offer discounts. I went and sang! No one noticed anything! I covered the terrible crimson scar with makeup and accessories.

Because I couldn’t live and breathe without the stage, I left my son and flew to the other side of the world. And then they buried me alive, and it was my own daughter! I joined my daughter’s agency Impresario, leaving behind all the most important agents in the opera world to give her the opportunity to work.
And such a betrayal.

Thank you to all of you, my friends and audience, who didn’t abandon me, who asked and supported me, who worried about me. Thank you to Olga Frolova, who introduced me to PR manager Maria Mitina, and Maria introduced me to Polina Di Grande, who became my manager. Thank you to Priscilla Baglioni for joining our team. I’ve known Priscilla since childhood, and now she’s the director of her own agency. The wonderful daughter of my colleague Bruna Baglioni. Our team also includes Nadia Praisler.

We are full of plans and ideas. Thank you to everyone who cared and supported! Thank you to everyone who asked when I would return to the stage.

Everything lies ahead! I’ve pulled myself together.
I’m alive.

Guleghina was one of my favorite Verdi lirico-spinto sopranos in 1990’s. Welcome back!

    • Tiredofitall says:

Seconded. A great artist who took no prisoners…meant as a compliment. I would love to hear her again.

  • Wiebke Göetjes says:

I saw her live as Lady Macbeth in Verona, 1997…Still impressed!
I wish her a wonderful comeback!

  • SlippedChat says:

Never saw her live, only know her from videos. A good Turandot, and also good as the female lead in “Andrea Chenier” (although it’s sometimes difficult not to laugh a bit during the final scene as Pavarotti’s meaty paws keep abusing the back of her wig).

I always like “comeback stories” where someone has experienced reverses but eventually triumphs again. I hope she is still in good voice.

  • Dan says:

Your story inspired me. As a 66 year old professional violinist, I’d almost given up on myself, what with various age related infirmities raising their ugly heads. You’ve inspired me to redouble my efforts to continue bringing the beauty of classical music to my audiences.

    • Eda says:

Do not give up. Some of us totally untalented people rely on people like you & Maria Guleghena to help us through life.

  • Sarah Hearn-von Foerster says:

Wonderful news…welcome back to the Met!

  • V.Lind says:

I’d be interested to know about the closure of this agency. The singer sounds very bitter and accusatory, but businesses do not usually “betray” clients — they can let them down if they fail, but there is a bit if a difference between failing, in a difficult economic climate (especially for the arts) and just closing.

Absent the facts of this massive “betrayal,” what I see here is a rather vindictive account, however great the artist. Given that we are hearing about a mother and daughter, I wonder if there might not be more to hear.

  • Alastair Miles says:

Good luck to her! What a journey! Remembering some great performances together…

  • Rob Donkers says:

So glad you will be singing again. One of the Greatest Diva’s. I will be cheering you on. X

  • Save the MET says:

    Brava!

  • Mystery says:

For those who might not be aware, “Artsakh” is the Armenian name for Nagorno-Karabakh, the (erstwhile) ethnic-Armenian enclave within Azerbaijan over which many battles have been fought, and from which the entire populace fled 6 months ago.

  • zandonai says:

Guleghina and Yundi are the greatest comeback stories of 2024.

  • Gavriel Heine says:

One of the greatest artistic and personal joys in my professional life was conducting a performance of Macbeth at the Mariinsky with Maria in the role of Lady Macbeth. She’s an absolute lioness and was vocally incredible. Her intensity was absolutely infectious and I’d work with her again in a heartbeat. And absolutely the warmest person.

  • Ava Manukyan says:

Mrs. Gulegina, wishing you a great comeback, much health and many years , and those fantastic roles on stage. Opera world was not the same without you. You were missed tremendously…

  • Yuri K says:

It’s truely amazing, how many Armenians believe in their official “Russia’s betrayal of Armenia” story.

    • ls says:

Pretty straightforward. Armenia and Russia have a mutual defense pact (as do numerous former Soviet states), so that if one is attacked the other will offer military support. In addition to assaults on Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan attacked and currently has invaded numerous Armenian border villages, and Russia offered zero military support.

    • Tom Phillips says:

Among the things none of you Russians seem to believe in are human rights, ethics, morality etc.

  • A.L. says:

She seems to be quite outspoken which is kind of refreshing in a world and a music business needing more honesty and transparency from their performers. I bet she has a thing or two or three to say about Netrebko and husband, given that these two are know to have taken sides against Guleghina’s ethnic make-up (Ukranian-Armenian). Would love to be a fly on the wall for that one.

  • Sieglinde says:

Charles my husband will tomorrow be 90 years old and I will be 90 in October! We have been married for
    61 years

  • Jan Venter says:

    Congratulations……

  • Richard Spencer says:

    Dear Mdm Guleghina

Love and best wishes from beautiful Cape Town.

May your talents go from strength to strength, continuing to enchant audiences and listeners all over the world!

  • Cassidy Chesnut says:

Brava Diva!!! My fav TOSCA, TURANDOT, ABIGAILE, & LADY MACBETTO!! SING FOR US AGAIN!!! XO >>> CC

  • Tom Phillips says:

Sounds like a good person. Been a very long time since I wanted to hear her sing, however.

  • Iphigenia in Aulide says:

Bravissima! All the best from Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

  • Allma Own says:

A moving story. The betrayal is no real surprise to me. Though she is apparently not Russian, every Russian friend I’ve had has stabbed me in the back sooner or later.

  • zandonai says:

Guleghina was the best Maddalena in the Met “Andrea Chenir” in 1996 with Pavarotti and Juan Pons.
