No objection to the winner. However the other finalists looked weaker than some other competitors who did not make it to the finals. For example: I was really surprised that Miquel Sepulveda was not choosen to the final round.

    • Another Orchestral Musician says:

Nonsense. Ana Maria was absolutely incredible ( no wonder she also won the Audience Prize and the Youth Jury prize) and so was Dong Chao.

    • Nielsen Carl says:

That’s just a “normal Malko competition” – few good conductors on the 1st day, only one on the 2nd, no one afterwards

    • Alexander Hall says:

Completely agree with your comment. The Portuguese and the German-Spanish both had lots of ideas and imagination and should have made the final six. Except they didn’t. Instead we had a Colombian who used her arms like a butter churn and little else. She walked off not only with second prize but the youth jury prize and the audience prize. What does that actually prove? Absolutely nothing. I have forgotten the many names of winners of international conducting competitions who then sank without trace. Not even leaving bubbles on the surface.

LA Phil better snap him up quick. They’re doing a “Korean Festival” next season.

  • John says:

Are you joking? Are you his Mom?
Dong was easily the best candidate in the final round. What were the judges thinking?

  • tp says:

It seems a bit odd/old and sad to see someone in mid-30s still on the competition circuit.

    • zandonai says:

What can I say. People today are late bloomers they live longer and achieve success later in life, if at all. Herr Doctor Richard Strauss got his Ph.D and composed his famous tone poems all in his early 20’s.
