German job for Irish conductor
OrchestrasDavid Brophy, 51, has been appointed Chief Conductor of the WDR Funkhaus Orchestra in Cologne.
Brophy crosses over regularly from rock to classical. He has worked with U2, Lang Lang, Nicola Benedetti and Sinéad O’Connor. He was chief conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Dublin for many years.
Super conductor and educator. Have seen him many times, most recently with the Irish NSO conducting Maxim Vengerov doing Sibelius followed by a brilliant Beethoven 7. Best of luck with the new job.
I’ve played under David on a number of occasions. He’s a skilled conductor, but more importantly, he’s a great communicator and a very warm person. Very glad he’s been appointed to this wonderful orchestra.
Very cool that they sponsor a “funkhaus” orchestra! Sounds much better than saying “pops.”
Great match. WDR Funkhaus is a fantastic crossover orchestra. They’ll have fun together.
I have worked with David as a chorus master. He is very patient and easy to work with. Congratulations David and enjoy the change
A very fine conductor and done some very fine and versatile work in Dublin with RTE. Really wish him well.
