The violinist Joshua Bell has been renewed as music director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields to August 2028.

He says: ‘It is an honour to announce this extension during the centenary celebration of Sir Neville Marriner, a man who not only helped launch my own recording career but who, over the course of half a century, fostered the Academy’s exceptional standard of excellence in orchestral playing that I strive to uphold today.’

  • Gerry Feinsteen says:

He’ll turn 57 this year. I remember little Joshie when he was 15. He certainly found the fountain of youth.
Likewise, his playing hasn’t matured much either

  • Observing2 says:

    Great Bell prolongs…not Bell ends.

  • Chet says:

“He says: ‘It is an honour…”

As an American, he most certainly did not say “honour” but “honor”

  • Philipp Lord Chandos says:

Sir Neville Marriner rings a bell.

  • Pet smart bird says:

He’s not allowed near children anymore i don’t think

  • zandonai says:

ASMF needs a real conductor, or they should go conductor-less like the Orpheus.
I have always found Joshua Bell’s hyperventilating violin playing style hard to stomach. It’s like someone who talks a lot but says very little.

  • Allma Own says:

Do they record anymore? Along with a few other chamber orchestras, they were the last bulwark against the horror of “period instrument” groups. The peak of classical and baroque music-making. Italy had the most such groups, I can’t recall their exact names, but they began with I.

    • zandonai says:

If you mean the Italian chamber orchestra that Claudio Scimone conducted. Yes they were great! They made some great opera recording with soprano Cecilia Gasdia.
