ADDRESS UNKNOWN

Evgeny Kissin and Thomas Hampson star in a play, based on the anti-fascist novel, banned in 1930s Germany.

By Kathrine Kressmann Taylor.

Directed by Marianna Arzumanova

Also starring: Karina Arzumanova

Based on the bestselling book, which was written as an anti-fascist call to arms and banned in 1930s Germany, ADDRESS UNKNOWN is a poignant and timely warning of how humanity can fail in the face of extreme ideology. In an era of austerity, recession, and rising nationalism, two friends are torn apart when the Nazi regime infiltrates their friendship and families to devastating effect. This new play premiered at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and recently sold out its London run.

Is Evgeny Kissin Hampson in the play?

  • Zandonai says:

I went to a concert by Thomas Hampson and Jerry Hadley in 1990’s San Francisco. It was affectionated dubbed by the locals, the “Tom and Jerry” Concert. 😀 😀 😀

Kissin channels his inner Oscar Levant.

Imagining EK as an actual actor in a play is not easy.

There was an excellent play called The Black Sea Follies, about Stalin and Shostakovich, that featured a piano trio on stage as actors. Musicians can be very effective actors, and there should be more opportunities like that. I commend these artists for taking this step.

I fell asleep last night during this 1 hour 20 minutes play. Kissin cannot act. Also, heavy accent, plus a very audible lisp made his reading incomprehensible. He and Hampson conveniently did not have to memorize the script. They were sitting at black desks and reading out loud their lines- reading their letters. It was suffocating and boring. Kissin was particularly stiff. I didn’t know he had a speech impediment. Hampson’s acting was more theatrical.
