Death of leading British flute
RIPThe British Flute Society has announced the death of its founder Christopher Hyde-Smith, aged 88.
A virtuosos soloists, handpicked by Benjamin Britten for multiple performances. He inspired works by such diverse and original composers as William Alwyn, Stephen Dodgson, Joseph Horowitz, William Mathias, John Metcalf and Alan Rawsthorne.
He was professor at the Royal College of Music and was married firstly to the harpist Marisa Robles.
It was a real pleasure to read your article. Nice article. You are a good author.
Yes, we’d all be the poorer without you, and less informed! Others will always criticise.
Congratulations for a long and distinguished career!
Bravo maestro!
The noun is flautist, surely?
Flutist in American English, or flute player or flautist in British English!
I prefer flutist. I play the flute. French people play flautes and are flautists.
They are also called flautists in British English.
He said flute, not flutist, though, and being English, I can tell you that we say flautist, NEVER flute player.
I vividly recall Christopher HS from my heady days in The National Youth Wind Orchestra- he tutored the flute section. A colourful character- who wore a cravat & was unmistakably an Old Etonian in mannerism!
