The trumpet player Guy Touvron, star pupil of Maurice Andre, has died aged 74 of an unspecified cause.

He was professor for many years at Lyon.

In September 2020, Guy Touvron was found guilty of sexual assault on a woman. He received a six-month suspended prison sentence and had to pay the complainant 5,000 Euros for moral and material damage.

A second charge has yet to be resolved.

Seeing people who have no knowledge whatsoever of the case, and probably not the slightest idea about french law, opine on it is funny and distressing at the same time.
I don’t know the case either and won’t pronounce on the adequacy of the sentence. But sexual assault is NOT rape, and covers a lot of different acts, from, say, groping in the underground to tearing off the clothes of the victim and touching sexual organs.
A six months suspended sentence probably means that Touvron kissed the musician against her will, of touched her through her clothes. Bad enough, but it doesn’t warrant sending someone to prison.
And à propos “in the US” : the harsh sentencing policy isn’t something to be proud about. It leads to an enormous incarceration rate (531/100.000 inhabitants, compared with France’s 107, Canada’s 85, Germany’s 67), without making the country safe (rate of intentionnal homicides : USA : 6.4/100.000 inhabitants ; Canada : 2.3 ; France : 1.1 ; Germany : 0.8). The US are the most dangerous rich country on earth. So much for the wisdom of “retiring” too lenient judges.

According to the proponents of Me Too, sexual assault is anything the woman says it is, and no proof or evidence is required. A woman can overhear a man telling his buddy that his wife is pregnant, and because pregnancy is a result of sex, she can say that she was sexually assaulted, and ruin the man’s life. Or her boyfriend dumped her for another woman. Or she didn’t get the promotion despite her 42% NPS. Just like the denunciation of heretics during the Inquisition, Me Too is a weapon of blackmail and revenge. And what is has done is set victim advocacy back 50 years.
