The love of two violists
OrchestrasValentine Day story from the Minneapolis Star Tribune:
How Rebecca Albers and Maiya Papach, principal violists for the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, have made a musical home in Minnesota…
Most weekend nights, you can find Papach, 46, performing as principal violist of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Albers, 40, as principal violist of the Minnesota Orchestra. …
“To have two violists of that caliber as principals in the same city — not to mention the fact that they’re married — is pretty incredible,” said Erin Keefe, concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra and a friend so close the three refer to one another as “sister wives.”…

I heard that a violinist in St Paul Orchestra was fired after taking a leave for injury but going to perform in St Barth’s instead. It happened a few weeks ago so can someone investigate what happened? Her name is not on the orchestra roster anymore.
Same thing happened to a young violist in CSO recently. You can’t take leave for injury (at least with pay!) and then do other gigs! What bozo doesn’t know that? But this has nothing to do with the wonderful story above!!
If those are facts, it shouldn’t be surprising she got fired, after all that’s what B. Chen did in Chicago and met the same fate
I immediately thought of one person and then lo and behold, her name is gone.
It’s wonderful when it all works out. Location is one thing. Career options is another. Bravo!
Among the shortest books ever written:
1) “Reasons I Love My Husband” by Hillary Clinton
2) “Motivational Speeches” by Dr Kevorkian
3) “When Two Conductors Marry” by (?)
I’m dying to get my hands on the book by Kevorkian.
This is a really nice story! lovely they have so much family around, too.
Isn’t one of the young violinist in St Paul have an affair with the concertmaster of St Paul last year?
you mean the actual con fuoco lady in the picture??
I advise you to be careful with your words… A past principal violinist harassed others in the orchestra. “Affair”, not quite…..
I don’t think he/she was talking about the past principal violinist… although I did hear that ms con fuoco reported the past principal violinist for his inappropriate behavior. perhaps, you’re not up to date with the current events of the Orch
Boston has married principal violinists. Christina Day Martinson is concertmaster of Boston Baroque and her husband Haldan Martinson is the principal second violin of the Boston Symphony.
Photo Check: I believe Ms. Con Fuoco is not actually the wife of Mrs. Bratsche…just a colleague!
Well if there’s anyone who knows about love affairs within the orchestra world (and the many perks to be had from them), it’s Erin Keefe . . . . .
Sorry, but what perks are you talking about? Erin had an incredible career in chamber music and teaching far before she fell in love. Nothing she has now was not available to her before!
Congrats to the Star Tribune on such a wonderful profile of two of the best people and violists!
You might want to take a peek at her paycheck. When the Music Director negotiates on your behalf, I’d call that a perk.
