Swedes mourn Pippi Longstocking composer
RIPThe Czech-born composer Georg Riedel died yesterday, aged 90.
He was the composer on most movies made from the children’s stories of Astrid Lindgren, including the main theme of Emil i Lönneberga. ‘Ida’s summer song’ is known to most Swedes from their childhood.
Riedl arrived in Sweden aged four, a refugee from Germany’s occupation of Czech territory.
Also a renowned bassist, famous for accompanying Jan Johansson on the gorgeous ‘Jazz På Svenska’ album
Jazz fans and those who appreciate audiophile recordings don’t know him for his film music, but rather as one the finest double bass players who git famous for Jazz at the Pawnshop ir Jazz pa Svenska. Interesting that he composed the music for Pippi, but his musical legacy are rather his wonderful jazz recordings. May he rest in peace.

Not classical, but a classic anyway: ‘Jazz på svenska’, with Jan Johansson (piano) and Georg Riedel (bass).
Georg Riedel was an absolutely phenomenal jazz bassist. I first heard him in 1962 when as a 14-year-old, I found this just released album, which I still have after 6 decades. May he rest in peace.
