Much-recorded Dutch pianist dies, 84
RIPThe death has been made known of Rudolf Jansen, an international pianist who became a sought-after Lieder accompanist.
He worked with, among others, Elly Ameling, Peter Schreier, Olaf Bär, Brigitte Fassbänder, Barbara Bonney and Hans Peter Blochwitz. He appears on more than 120 CD recordings
Brigitte Fassbaender sic!
Interesting observation. I can find only one other reference to Brigitte’s last name being spelt as “Fassbänder”, that being her biography on encyclopedia.com I note that in languages that do not include ä as part of their regular alphabet, it is frequently replaced with the combination ae.
An exceptional accompanist. A wonderful radio broadcast of him performing Britten’s Winter Words with the English tenor David Johnston recently surfaced on youtube – it’s a performance as good as any other recording I’ve heard of the work. RIP.

RIP Rudolf Jansen. I spent many days, nights, winter, springs, summers, and falls, listening to exquisite interpretations of Elly Ameling and Rudolf Jansen at beautiful french chanson and german lieder. During the time when art songs were important studies and worthy of many dreamy hours divining the ears of young prospective singers, this was indeed the pastime of my youth. A world basically forgotten and far far away.
