London Philharmonic gets a series on Sky
OrchestrasThe London Philharmonic Orchestra has a four-part documentary series on Sky Arts, starting March 13.
Titled ‘Backstage with the London Philharmonic Orchestra’, the cameras follow conductor Edward Gardner and musicians as they prepare for Mahler’s second symphony.
Gardner said: ‘We thoroughly enjoyed filming this documentary series, knowing that we were showcasing both our wonderful orchestra and Mahler’s incredible score. Sky Arts viewers will be able to witness LPO phenomenal family of musicians and staff through the process to performance, with hard work and absolute passion for the music. It will open up Mahler’s world, music and sheer magnitude of his Second Symphony; I remember vividly the electric atmosphere in the concert hall before the performance started, the journey that the audience, musicians and I went on together through Mahler’s transformation from death to life, and the eruption of applause as the piece triumphantly ended. I’m thrilled we can share the experience with an even wider audience on Sky Arts.’
It is a pity Sky Arts doesn’t show more recent concert performances from the London orchestras and others they have featured in the past. Almost all their programmes are repeats now several times over. The last significant programme of concerts was the Bruckner symphony cycle before Christmas which dsred from 2019
It was an electrifying concert. Gardner and the Orchestra get better and better. Beth Taylor was very moving in Urlicht and The London Philharmonic Choir were superb in the final movement.
Look forward to it we at the Edinburgh Music Review are big fans of Beth Taylor
and the regular choir members was joined by Roderick Williams who clearly was having a great time
Does anyone remember the documentary about the Philharmonia Orchestra in the 90s? I seen to remember Christopher Warren Green trying to talk to Yevgeny Svetlanov and getting literally silence back…also a lot of footage of Leonard Slatkin as well….
