German universities object to cancelling Wimbledon
NewsThe Rectors Conference of German Music Universities has fiercely denounced plans to cut the national ARD music competition by around 50 percent.
This, they say, ‘totally contradicts the cultural mission of public broadcasters’. They add: ‘The ARD music competition is as important to the international classical music scene as the Berlinale is to film or the Wimbledon tournament is to the tennis world.’
Unfortunately, it has been quite a while since the ARD produced a new Federer or Mutter.
Competitions don’t need to garantee outcome but opportunity, as in horse races.
