Dudamel ends 18-year Tanglewood absence
OrchestrasHighlights of Tanglewood 2024, just announced, include Gustavo Dudamel with the National Children’s Symphony of Venezuela, his first visit since 2006. Dudamel has also made some sort of peace with the Venezuelan regime, though he is not flying its Sistema flag.
Some may see in his return the hand of Chad Smith, his former ally at the LA Phil, now running the BSO.
There are also BSO conducting debuts for Dalia Stasevska, Sami Tachid and Ryan Bancroft.
Andris Nelsons tops the Tanglewood bill with ten programmes and two masterclasses.
Since the NY Phil doesn’t have a summer home like the Hollywood Bowl, Dudamel is going to take over Tanglewood as his new summer home, with the help of some old friends from LA.
(Especiallyu now that the NY Times has identified Nelsons as the weakest link among the top maestros… Let the Hunger Games begin)
Nelsons will give masterclasses on how to keep your nose in the score and only look up when turning pages.
Which is something that he generally doesn’t do anywhere except in your delusions. It amazes me how firmly grounded some people are in fantasy worlds.
I disagree with the carping comments posted here about Nelsons. He is a good one and has nothing to worry about.
Vienna loves him, Berlin loves him, Leipzig loves him and Boston loves him. Chad is the problem.
