Create your own Valentine’s Day concert
Daily Comfort ZoneOrchestras and promoters flood us every year with slushy wallows on dating nights.
Time we offered some alternatives. Such as:
Schumann piano concerto (for Clara)/ Messiaen Turangalila Symphony (for Yvonne)
*
Wagner Tristan prelude/Britten Serenade for tenor, horn and stringhs (for Peter)/ Vaughan Williams 5th symphony (for Ursula)
*
Brahms D minor concerto (for Clara)/ Bruckner’s 9th symphony (for God)
Go on…. your turn
God (whatever one) was certainly with the LSO last night at the Barbican for an extraordinary performance of Bruckner 9!
who is this???
Was there any real music on the programme?
In the interest of compactness and efficiency, what about Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder doing double duty: for poetess and muse Mathilde, with whom he was presumably having an affair, and for her husband Otto Wesendonck, from whom he was (as usual) begging for money.
You beat me to it. Better choice than the Tristan prelude. Another alternative: the Siegfried Idyll (for Cosima).
Wagner did not ‘beg Otto for money’. Wesendonck offered himself to sponsor Wagner’s works.
Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle (for Marta). The most romantic piece I know. (Wink.)
Better, perhaps, as (against Steffi). Bartok’s 3rd piano concerto (for Ditta).
“My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth” for (the late) Peter Schickele (and anyone else who matters).
Mahler’s Sixth for Alma.
Prelude & Liebestod
Beethoven Emperor
Brahms Symphony 1
Rachmaninoff’s 6 Romances, Op.38 (for Nina Koshetz)
Pierre Boulez, “Pli selon pli” (for Pierre B.).
Two years ago a mysterious admirer sent me an extra Pli box. I first thought it was famous pianist (redacted) who had sent me flowers earlier, but no it happened to be the gardener. In spite of my grave disappointment, I listen to both versions with pleasure, but at nr IV, ‘A la nue accablante tu’, I get the shivers, thinking of the gardener.
