The Lithuanian-Armenian soprano has been talking to Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Gramophone magazine about the perspective that brings out her passion on stage.

It’s not complicated: ‘We women always love the bad guys, especially as teenagers.’

More here (behind paywall).

Asmik is the world’s  most sought-after dramatic soprano in the post-Netrebko environment.

  • A.L. says:

She is opera’s Amy Winehouse and marketed as such. If you look at the cover of her soon to be released Richard Strauss album (Four Last Songs), you will understand why. Besides, there is no distinguishing personal sound or style to her voice. All too generic.

    • John Kelly says:

But see her on stage and…….just wow.

      • Chi Eg says:

Ditto! I thought she was “interesting” on telecasts and broadcasts but then I saw Vienna Turandot. Wow! One of the most exciting voices I’ve heard in years. There is incredible power and beauty in the voice when heard live – and she’s a riveting actress.

  • Wahlberliner says:

Lithuanian Armenian, not Lithuanian Georgian. Any surname ending in -ian tends to be a distinct giveaway.

  • TheSinger says:

Her father was Armenian, not Georgian.

  • Ernest says:

I think Lise is more deserving of the title of the world’s most sought after dramatic soprano post Netrebko.

    • John Kelly says:

Tend to agree after last night’s Wesendonk lieder with the Met Orch at Carnegie. Just extraordinary. Gelb should be building productions around her (like he did with Netrebko). Maybe he is. The “voice of the century” I stated last evening and the conducting student from Julliard sitting next to me wholeheartedly agreed. There’s plenty of room for Asmik (a completely different voice and singer type). An absolutely compelling actress she is Butterfly at the Met this Spring. Having seen her in Salzburg as Suor Angelica I can’t wait!

      • Tristan says:

You must be joking as Trittico was awful – listen to Ermonela Jaho to realize how Puccini should be sung – most overrated singer around but definitely happy she is around – the hype is just pathetic

      • Don Ciccio says:

There is another singer that the Met needs to engage back pronto: Christian Gerhaher. He was absolutely marvelous as Wolfram.

    • Don Ciccio says:

There is nothing dramatic about trebs on stage. She was never dramatic soprano.

Her outside demeanors, well, that’s another story.

  • Tristan says:

she isn’t at all a dramatic soprano – you don’t seem the know what a dramatic soprano is – she is just pressed into wrong repertoire by the clueless press and opera managers who don’t know the repertoire

  • Bloom says:

Hype doesn’t make her any good. The star system ruins voices, minds and souls.
