The Australian National University School of Music in Canberra, no stranger to controversy, has outdone itself by dismissing two long-serving teachers, the violinist and violist Tor Fromyhr and the cellist David Pereira.

ANUS says they were appointed incorrectly. They are being offered re-employment as casual labour.

This is the National University of Australia, remember.

“Casual labor”. Sounds like American academia’s Adjunct Professor. No permanent contract, no benefits, lousy pay. Gee what a surprise from the academic world.

    • Bill says:

Basically yes, instead of being a professor they are now a lecturer so to speak..which means paid hourly with limited hours and no benefits.

  • Tony Magee says:

Oh please. ANU and SOM are the two institutions here. Australian National University and School of Music (a faculty). ANUS makes no sense whatsoever. It’s never had that acronym. Prior to being absorbed into the ANU, it was an independent tertiary music institution named The Canberra School of Music, founded in 1965 by Ernest Llewellyn. The 1400 seat Llewellyn Concert Hall within bears his name. Upon the building of the then new and still current premises in 1976, Llewellyn enlisted the help and advice of his good friend Isaac Stern for curriculum expansion. Some of that was based on the Juilliard model.

  • GUEST says:

I can imagine WA Mozart participating very cheekily in this discussion.

One might suppose that ANUS are sole agents for musical actitivies there…..

  • Aussie says:

SD consistently resorts to using sensationalist headlines for clicks, while the boomers chime in with cringe-worthy puns. The term “ANUS” is misleading; it actually stands for the ANU School of Music.
