New Year’s Day Opera 2024 – Verdi’s Traviata
OperaSlippedisc is celebrating New Year’s Day with Verdi’s opera La traviata directed by David McVicar and conducted by Renato Palumbo at Teatro Real Madrid in 2015. Not only one of the world’s most popular operas, this production is also a ‘classic’ for the OperaVision channel too – it was the very first show it streamed on 8 May 2015. Violetta is sung by Ermonela Jaho.
The Plot: Verdi’s masterpiece is the tragic story of a high-society courtesan who renounces life itself to protect the honour of her lover, demonstrating with her self-sacrifice a nobility so lacking from the hypocritical bourgeois society that abuses and then rejects her.
