Maestros and motor cars: (1) Wilhelm Furtwängler
UncategorizedWhat’s he driving?
It’s a Horch, the 830 model with a 3 litre V8 engine and styled by Gläser of Dresden.
It didn’t last long. He got talking to Richard Strauss while driving and went right off the road.
So was it a ‘Short Ride in a Fast Machine’?
“He got talking to Richard Strauss while driving and went right off the road.” Who wouldn’t?
By that time RS had his entanglement with the nazis. Maybe they were discussing how to get out of the trap.
And he didn’t even have a phone to distract him!! Kleiber was fond of cars too and had a serious accident in Switzerland.
Which Kleiber?
I am researching which motorcar the great Maestra Lydia Tár drove. I have heard it was a Saab, but that she later traded it in for a pre-owned VW Beetle. If anyone has any information please post it. My doctoral dissertation is titled:
‘The effect of automobile culture on the rise of female conductors’
That doctoral dissertation theme has already been used several times.
What is it about conductors, batons and oversized cars? Answers on a postcard (à la Carlos Kleiber).
A similar Horch Special Roadster, along with a Mercedes-Benz 540, may be seen in the Robert Wise film of _The Sound of Music_, driven by the Nazis who are pursuing the Trapp family. Cars of that era had nothing resembling modern brakes. Stops must be planned well in advance and momentum is important. I suspect that’s why WF drove off the road.
