Listen to David Krauss’s latest guest on Speaking Soundly  the singer-songwriter and comedian Regina Spektor, a classically trained Soviet immigrant who rose from have-nothing poverty to the heights of celebrity.

Before long she was opening for the English pop band Keane and drawing high praise from Kate Bush.

‘I thought I would be a classical musician, or I wouldn’t have music in my life,’ she tells David. ‘I was struggling.’
