Salzburg raises $200,000 for Barenboim
NewsPress release:
On the occasion of Daniel Barenboim’s 80th birthday, Cecilia Bartoli and the Salzburg Whitsun Festival presented a benefit gala for the Daniel Barenboim Foundation. On 29 May 2023, Cecilia Bartoli, Sonya Yoncheva, Rolando Villazón, Plácido Domingo, Martha Argerich and Lang Lang performed at the Großes Festspielhaus for and together with Daniel Barenboim. The long-standing friends Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta conducted the gala concert, which was performed by the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
The benefit gala netted revenues exceeding 186,000 Euros (US204,000). Cecilia Bartoli and the Salzburg Festival are delighted to support the Daniel Barenboim Foundation with this impressive sum.
Delighted to hear this. Barenboim may not have long to go, but his legacy will be immense. He has performed musical wonders and I hope that West-Eastern Divan will continue for a long, long time.
Ridiculous. Benefit galas shouldn’t benefit millionaires.
Bartoli – a mosquite voice, great on CDs but never live, supported by the mafia of directors to have a career as a manager
Swing and a miss……
PB,
I think the narrative makes it clear that the money goes to the Barenboim Foundation, not to the man himself (which would be wrong, I agree with you, if it were that).
Exactly, Peter. It’s irksome when people don’t bother to read posts carefully before sounding off. Presumably PB was fooled by the click-bait title, so NL must take some responsibility also.
He won’t be using the proceeds. Trust me. He’s not a materialist.
It’s for his Foundation not him personally.
A sad selfish and nasty comment
The money goes to his foundation
They have done so much to foster peace
The great maestro has many beloved friends and thousands of grateful admirers who have enjoyed his gifts of music for many decades. Grazie encore from someone who had a precious opportunity to share a stage and joyful music with you!
Exactly! He has been a great inspiration to me since I was a school girl in London ten years younger, and then seeing him do all the Beethoven piano sonatas over several nights to packed London audiences at the Royal Festival Hall in about 2007 or 2008, many times conducting at the Proms, and his Ring in sub-Sahara temperatures that year at 70 at the Proms in 2013. For some of us, he’s been a lifelong musical companion. Others will disagree, don’t like him, or whatever, you want, but he’s been part of my life fr so long.
I went to all his London Beethoven concerts, I have the tickets framed and hung in a place of honour in my house.
Barenboim. Bernstein. Barenboim hands down everytime.
Comparisons are odious. Why did you post this one?
That’s rather passive-aggressive behavior of Saltzburg vis-à-vis Israel.
Not to mention that’s after Salzburg got its cut, the contribution being net not gross receipts.
Fantastically good news.
Oh’ So the “avengers” collection of classical “superstars” collected just about as much money as a single tweet from Kim K?
Sounds about right.
