That musical is an abomination. Getting Latinos to legitimize neoliberal hype. Fortunately, many finally caught on to what the musical was really promoting.
Not so sure a show still grossing well over $2 million a week on B’way as well as enjoying a sold out national tour and a hot selling production in the West End means anyone’s caught on to anything other than liking a well crafted score and book.
In case you want to pull your head out of the sand, here’s just a smattering of the many commentaries about the neoliberal propaganda in the musical. And of course it’s still running profitably. The elite ranging from the neocon establishment, to the USA’s Clintonian faux left, to the Walt Disney Corp. are all for obvious reasons fully behind it. (Too bad Pinochet and the generals of the Argentine Junta weren’t able to attend.) Now let’s stand and say the pledge of allegiance and praise our powdered wigged forefathers who constitutionlized human slavery in order to keep all those plantations going in our system of unmitigated capitalism. No problem. Just cover it all up with a musical full of bald-faced lies and misrepresentations presented by POC in powered wigs. Gosh, that lady just sang 1400 evenings of lies. What a landmark! Forgive my cynicism, but there’s little else one can do in today’s USA.
