There was no lack of puff in either of his two concerts in Hamburg. His Philadelphians were on absolutely fabulous form: the famous Philadelphia Sound was on very convincing display. When this combination is firing on all cylinders, there are very few to touch them.
He’s a spoiled brat. He has nothing to tell us, only enthusiasm to share. He works passage by passage; every passage is vital. There is no sight of the whole work, whether it’s the long Rach 2 (heard Friday) or the compact Berlioz Corsaire. So nothing adds up despite strong rhythms, good dynamic control, a fine sense of legato and an easy rapport with other musicians. These he salutes on stage generously, but you grasp where the praise is heading even if the glitter on his heels hasn’t signaled fully during the music. He’s a Sam Bankman-Fried: pampered, bright, thieving, never meaning harm. Where is he? By tonight he will have led eight concerts with three orchestras in five months in Baden-Baden, the rich spa town, and will pull off a similar boondoggle there involving a different pliant orchestra set before August. He enjoys the bubbles. And yes, the Philadelphians, like the Met Orchestra, sound marvelous at present.
Utter nonsense.
You’re to Nézet-Séguin what Chicagorat is to Muti: hate that points to deep-seated personal issues.
You´re right…Absolutely feckless comments from some frustrated armchair conductors .
Get off your horse. You point is poorly if not at all supported.
Philadelphia and conductor were on top form in Baden-Baden on Friday and Saturday with tons of energy. One should think that this dark, glowing sound can only originate from certain Russian orchestras, but … no. This is unique and fantastic Rach. What Trifonov did together with them was far beyond the capabilities of his instrument.
Like music is about energy only ( the whaou effect you can hear in the us) just inside force projected to the outside, what about the opposite movement? I see where Bernstein ‘ s energy went, his dissolves in the air….
The concerts were absolutely terrific….I haven´t heard the orchestra in such form since Ormandy´s days(albeit they play more nuanced now). And Trifonov is unbelievable. I haven´t heard such high adrenaline Rachmaninoff in a long time.
You might want to mention that he and the Philly Orchestra are receiving rave reviews. More and nice photos here, including of Alan Gilbert, Daniil Trifonov and J. Bell.
