The British contralto Dame Sarah Connolly is joining the Royal College of Music as a professor in its Vocal and Opera Faculty.

She will teach one-to-one from September next year.

Dame Sarah says: ‘‘I am thrilled to be back in the arms of my Alma Mater, the Royal College of Music as a vocal professor. I remember too well the anxieties around achieving high standards as a student and I look forward to encouraging my students and starting exciting new journeys.’

Good move. The RCM has, since opening the Britten Theatre in 1986, a marvellous stage to showcase burgeoning talent. In those days, the RNCM ruled the vocal roost (Pace, Guildhall) but Prince Consort Road made a declaration of intent by filling in that little garden that separated it from Imperial College. Since then, the RCM has continued to recrute fine singers onto its vocal staff. Good luck, Dame Sarah…

A sure sign her performing career, such as it was, is on the wane. Some performers actually find they are better teachers, good luck to her.

    Contralto? Isn’t she a mezzo?
