The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has renewed its vows with the elusive Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

In place of her infrequent role as  principal guest conductor, she will become Associate Artist – which is totally meaningless.

But it makes both parties happy.

Mirga was music director in Brum from 2016 to 2022. She has since withdrawn from holding any time-consuming job in order to raise a young family.

I, for one, am glad that a link remains as I am a big fan of her artistry

  • Willym says:

They may be happy but from the tone you don’t appear to be. The reason?

    • Captain Obvious says:

      Misogyny?

    • V.Lind says:

Odd, isn’t it? NL was a huge Mirga booster for years. Perhaps he feels let down that she has child care issues and a desire to have a normal family life. I would think, if his previous rating of her was halfway accurate, the yeomanry of Birmingham will be delighted that she is back, however often. She must think well of the orchestra and the city, too.

The title is meaningless indeed. What matters is her presence on the podium, as and when she can and will.

  • Tony Sanderson says:

Hopefully it will mean she may conduct more often in Birmingham

  • WU says:

Obviously she is not elusive enough^^
